The Lake House Story Part I: Living a taste of the good life
A taste of the good life wasn’t enough for The Lake House Denmark owners Garry and Leanne, so they decided to make it a permanent feast.
One trip to Western Australia’s South West is all you need to get a taste of the good life. It’s a flavour as tasty as a relaxing holiday, an escape to the country or a tranquil weekend away. And it refreshes the palate like a lemon sorbet.
You can taste it at The Lake House Denmark. A beautiful drive up Mt Shadforth (Tourist) Drive will lead you to Turner Road and then down to The Lake House, where you’ll come across a rustic cellar door and restaurant set on the banks of an idyllic lake.
Surrounded by towering karri trees, it’s the perfect location to breathe in the fresh country air and feast on the spoils of nature (think gloriously plump grapes pressed and bottled into the finest of wine, and hand picked fruit and veg served fresh alongside local cured meats on The Lake’s world-renowned gourmet tasting platters).
It’s a slice of paradise carefully crafted by owners Garry and Leanne, who first began their Lake House journey 16 years ago.
It all started with small trips to Australia’s South West, where they’d get a little taste of the good life each time. Garry and Leanne loved the flavour, but a taste wasn’t enough… They wanted the whole feast, including sweets, every day of the week.
“While we loved life in the city, we always knew we wanted to escape to the country,” Leanne says. “To find a place where we could wake to the sounds of nature, instead of cars; where we could grow our own organic veggies, make our own wine; and where we could feel part of a like-minded community.”
After many years spent toying with the idea of a country escape, the couple chanced upon a 91.5-acre property featuring an already established vineyard, a 6-hectare lake and a mudbrick cellar door. In 2005, they bought it.
With a dream to share a taste of the good life with others, Garry and Leanne concocted an idea – a boutique winery and restaurant that would share a taste of the good life with all.
“A year later The Lake House was open for business,” Garry says. “Since then we’ve grown the business to include its very own range of now highly awarded, premium cool climate wines, a handcrafted specialty foods label Vinofood, and Winespa skincare products that are pure and natural – our way of bringing a taste of the good life to you, no matter where you are or where you go.”
